“We will send a plane with equipment and specialists for extinguishing forest fires to Chile,” Colombian President Gustavo Petro wrote on Sunday, February 5.
According to Petro, the reason for the fires in Chile is the climate crisis.
Chilean leader Gabriel Borich expressed gratitude to Petro for the assistance provided.
“Thank you, friend! Latin American unity makes any distance small. A fraternal embrace,” Borich replied to his Colombian counterpart on Twitter.
Earlier in the day, it became known that at least 22 people died as a result of forest fires in Chile. The Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Carolina Toa added that, according to the latest information, 554 people were injured, 16 of them received moderate and severe injuries.
The Colombian authorities have currently registered 251 active fires.
Thousands of police officers, firefighters and military personnel are involved in rescue operations. 74 units of special ground equipment, six aircraft, as well as Marine Corps resources are involved.
In connection with the fires, Chilean President Gabriel Borich declared a state of emergency in Bio-bio and Newble. This allows local authorities to involve the armed forces to maintain order, as well as to take all emergency administrative measures necessary to restore normal life in the affected area.
